Feedback on group 3 (SEGA)

blog: https://segadv.wordpress.com/

by Yuexue Jin

The blog of team SEGA provided a structured view of project, data, and design processes. It is notable that the diverge process shows various interactive ideas, such as the pie charts, bar charts and globe can be useful tools for further visualization in the emerge phase. However, regarding the figure that calculates proportion of casualties due to terrorism, I personally do not understand since the hand written drawing does not stand for particular meaning, maybe simpler ones like circles or squares can be used here. I also have a question regarding the picture that shows the deadliest and safe day of the year, that what does the black lines stand for?

With regard to the emerge/ converge phase, these combinations of visualization successfully present the information contained and well explain the corresponding variables within a time interval. A suggestion back to the research question is that since there is only one broad question, it may be an idea to make the questions more detailed regarding the NUF criteria, now that the sketches are completed so there might be some more specific ideas in mind as well.

For group 15. They got an ethical topic. In general, it is about the effect of the climate change to the human and animals. In detail, they want to indicate this phenomenon by analysis the data of three kinds of penguin. The motivation and the background information are clear which could let us know why they want to do that. Also, the objective of their design is clear, they want to find the driving factors. But I think maybe they can add more objectives and research questions which could let their project more interesting and profound.

About the design part on Miro. First, I have to say it is very creative that they have sketch about trees, bar, ratio figure. But I will give them a suggestion. The informal handwriting of the sketch makes me a little confused about the meaning of this figure. Especially for the tree figure. Anyway, the center of their sketch is about the population of the penguins, which fits the theme well.

In the emerge part. They showed interesting combinations. Such as geography angle. Time series angle. Besides, they create food figure to connect the food to be a factor to the whole theme. But the handwriting is still informal. I could not understand their figure. Maybe it is a small problem for them since they know what themselves.

Last, I can not see anything in the converge part. Maybe they can add it later.

Group 9 blog is interesting! In the below, I will discuss the blog post on Group 9 designs

Great designs:

- The emerge phase is very creative!

- The Network of Energy Characteristics is a nuance idea!

- The Interactive World Map is straightforward. So the audiences will be able to get the information quickly.

Remarks:

- Some of the exciting sketches: Data Prism, Multilevel Visualization (Hands up! How creative they are)

- Some of the combinations: I appreciate how group 9 shows the logical link with different sketches.

  • I am not sure how can group 9 produce some sketches into vitalization. Some sketches seem a bit complex for the audiences. Consider, for example, whether we can use the vitalizations to tell an attractive but straightforward story to the audiences.

Things to keep:

  1. The ideas of how to design the visuallization to explore the data in your third post are quite clear, which makes it quite easy and convenient for viewers to understand your process of designing. You display even all details during the process.
  2. Many sketches are showed and some of them are very interesting and creative. For example, the second sketch in the diverge phase is quite straightforward, I can even guess what it means without reading the explanation(though your explanation is so ambiguous that I nearly have to expain the sketch by myself).Though problems also exist, your third post is quite good.

Things to change:

  1. I have said above that your explanation is a little ambiguous, sometimes I need to guess what it means by myself. Maybe you can have a better and more detailed explanation for your creative sketches.
  2. If I don’t miss anything, you didn’t show your reaserch questions in the blog, right? I want to know what you want to derive from the owa liquor in detailed words, otherwise I could not have an overview about your project.
  3. In the part of data description, I think that you seem to really begrudge your words because of the lack of explanation. Please give more explanation, words also matter as much as visuallization does.
