Welcome to our first exploration for the project! In this post, we are going to show some sketches during the process of exploring the design space. All the sketches can be found in our Miro Board (click to have access to the board), here is an overview.

Diverge Phase

In the diverge phase, we created some sketches and we are going to discuss about some of them that we are interested in.

sketch 1 & sketch 2 & sketch 3

1.In the first sketch, we want to explore some statistics about all the fatal cases, so we here draw a diagram to show the number of cases in every month of every year from 2000. Such a diagram is very cool to show the changes of sum of cases, and we can easily see some outstanding time points.

2. In the second sketch, we aim to show the ratio of races which those victims belong to in each state. Race is an important factor that we want to explore via this project.

3. In thr third sketch, we are interested in exploring the distribution of ages of being killed for each race. Normally, it’s a bad thing that more young people are involved in bloody police violence, it is related with the safety of a state or a city.

Emerge Phase

Now that we have come up with different sketches in the diverge phase, our further goal is to combine some of them to create a new visuallization design. In the emerge phase, we are going to combine some of the skeches to create the converge. Please note that the thoughts fot the final converge may be not mature enough for implement, here we just aim to show our initial idea of displaying more information. We will certainly polish our design during the implement.

emerge 1
  1. The left one is to show the changes of number of victims from different races in 20 years. The right one is to describe the ratio of races killed by police in each state. We combine them to show the changes of number of victims from different races in each state from 2000 to 2020, and we use different colors to represent diffrent races.
emerge 2

2. We combine the plot of the number of victims of diffrent races with the ratio of female and male victims in different races. From such a combination, we can find the changes of number of female and male victims in different races, and can easily find the trend of the changes respectively.

emerge 3

3. In this combination, we combine the personal income with the number of victims in each state, to create a relationship between personal income and number of victims, because we want to find if there is a trend that low income contributes to number of victims. The larger the circle is, the higher of the personal income; the lighter the color is, the smaller the number of victimes.

To be continued…
